I hadn't heard about this movie until seeing following the link on Roberta's blog. It definately looks like one to make a point to go see. And I haven't gone to the theater since 'The Little Mermaid" came out, so that's saying something! (Hmmm.. maybe there's a connection there...)

Here's the trailer.

I saw this trailer about 4 months ago...I don't remember where (that's what happens when you keep clicking on links:)

It will be interesting to see what kind of response it gets from the public as a whole.

I was disappointed that Ben Stein back-pedalled a little when asked about his involvement with this movie; but then he DOES write for a major newspaper, and this was not considered very politically correct I suppose.

Was this during an interview, and do you remember where? I'd like to watch that..or hear it.
"I was disappointed that Ben Stein back-pedalled a little when asked about his involvement with this movie;"
I was under the impression it was his movie and was not just acting.

I heard an interview with him today and he sounded pretty firm.

Yikes! I didn't mean to start anything here..really. Let me explain: I saw this video clip about 4 months ago. I was kindof excited that someone that well-known was promoting it. So I wanted to check it out more, and googled for news about it. Which took me to an article by a known newspaper (I just can't remember which one) that said when he was questianed about doing this film he said (I can't quote exactly because it's been too long) something to the effect that he wasn't saying he totally disagreed with evolution, just that he thought both sides should be able to be heard. HOWEVER, at the time he wrote a column for (I think) USA today and I wondered if he had to give a disclaimer of sorts because of this(?). His statement at the time (whatever it was exactly) was just a little bit of a let-down to me because I saw that it took away a little bit from the whole thing.

I still think it's good he was in the film (he said he was approached to be in it).

When I tried to find it just now, only recent articles are coming up because of the film being out now. If I can find it again, I'll leave the link here.

Next time I'll make sure I make a statement such as this only on my "turf" (that IS why I started another blog, right?).

Well, if that is what he said, I don't really disagree with him. I don't have a problem with evolution being taught truthfully-that is it's a theory to explain orgins that some people hold to and here are the reasons why. And it should be taught alongside other theories. But as it is it is usually taught as fact and with no real competing ideas.

I took a semester of anthropology in highschool and though my teacher made it clear that he did believe evolution, I have to credit him because he always reminded us that it was a theory and not scientifically proven. I wasn't a Christian at the time, but when I left that class (and I did get an A.) I was more convinced that there was a God than when I came. It seemed very, very improbable to me, just on the face of it. Even if there was truth to it, I couldn't believe it happening without a God to "help it along".

We shouldn't be afraid to debate the truth. After all, isn't that what we are trying to get them to allow us to do?

That being said, after listening to the interview yesterday, it appears to me that he does hold a creationist view.

I have to admit that I wouldn't want my own kids taught evolution, even as a theory, or alongside creationism (other than the most basic explanation by myself). However, there IS some merit at times to letting them see both sides of the argument; I am letting my son see that when it comes to politics and religion.

I really enjoy discussing things like this, and yours is one of the few blogs I've found that allows this kind of interaction. And YOU said you didn't have anything intelligent to say...

You've made me more curious about this whole thing, I'll have to see if I can find an interview clip of Ben Stein online. I DID read where a liberal article said this movie could NOT be ignored, as much as they would like to do so; so it sounds like they are getting some people's attention on both sides of the field.

No worries, you didn't.

That's the biggest difficulty of blogs and commenting...you can't hear tone.
I asked and commented in a straightforward manner...no challenge or defensiveness on my part. Just curious to read (or see) what you had.
When I watch the trailer, I get that Stein believes in divine origin, yet thinks both should be allowed to present differing viewpoints. And this movie seems to be exposing the intolerence from the side that demands tolerance. how ironic!...and sadly expected.
